Master Mind for the OS/2 2.0 Presentation Manager
(C) Peter Wansch, 1993
Version 2.11
May 10, 1993
Object of the game
==================
The object of Master Mind is to crack a hidden color code that is a
combination of four not neccessarily different colors. The player makes
a move by placing color pieces on the board. When the player has filled
a row, the move is evaluated. The game is over when either the player
has cracked the hidden code or when all squares on the board have been
filled and the last try was not correct either.
Playing the game
================
To begin a new game choose New from the Game menu and select the level
of play which is either Beginner or Master by choosing the corresponding
item from the Options menu. The current level of play is indicated by a
check mark left to the menu item text. If Beginner is selected the hidden
code is made up of four different colors. If Master is selected the hidden
code is any combination of the available six different colors (Red, Green,
Blue, Yellow, Black and White). The board is filled from the bottom row up
to the top row. The first column of the board is used to display the
evaluation of the tries. To make a move, move the pointer to an empty square.
The pointer changes its color to the color that is currently selected.
You can select another color either by clicking mouse button 2 until the
pointer has the desired color or by selecting a color from the Color menu.
If the mouse pointer has the desired color place a piece by clicking mouse
button 1. A legal move is indicated by a color pointer. After you have placed
the last color piece in a row your try is evaluated by comparing your try
with the hidden code. For every piece that has the right color and the right
position a black square is displayed on the evaluation square.
For every piece that has the right color but is on a wrong position a white
square is displayed on the evaluation square. You have cracked the code if
you have four black squares on the evaluation square. The fewer tries you
require to crack the code the better you get. If you have already placed
less than three pieces in a row, you may also want to undo your moves. In
this case choose Undo from the Game menu. After a try has been evaluated it
cannot be undone.
Control Keys
============
The control keys used for Master Mind are as follows:
Arrow keys: move you around the board in the direction of the arrow.
Enter, Spacebar, Return: Places a piece in the default color.
G: Places a green piece.
R: Places a red piece.
Y: Places a yellow piece.
B: Places a blue piece.
W: Places a white piece.
A: Places a black piece.
When you press either G, R, Y, B, W or A the default color is also set to
the corresponding color.
Note
====
If a display driver for a monochrome display is installed a character
representing the color will be displayed inside each piece and the background
of the piece will be white to increase readability. Master Mind can also be
played on computers that have no pointing device installed or attached.
What is new in Verison 2.11?
============================
Nothing much really. I just removed a few bugs.
